Give Thanks To The Lord Our God And King - Chris Tomlin & Jesse Reeves - Forever

Give Thanks To The Lord, also known as 'Forever' by Chris Tomlin and Jesse Reeves has been hugely popular. It was written back in 2000 but is still being used regularly by worship leaders around the world. In fact, Give Thanks To The Lord (Forever) was the 7th most used song in churches across the United States and Canada during August 2009.

Why has this song been so popular? Let's take a look at the lyrics:

Give thanks to the Lord
Our God and King
His love endures forever
For He is good, He is above all things
His love endures forever
Sing praise, sing praise

With a mighty hand
and outstretched arm
His love endures forever
For the life that's been reborn
His love endures forever
Sing praise, sing praise
Sing praise, sing praise

Forever God is faithful
Forever God is strong
Forever God is with us
Forever
Forever

From the rising to the setting sun
His love endures forever
By the grace of God
We will carry on
His love endures forever
Sing praise, sing praise
Sing praise, sing praise

The lyrics are easy to understand, simple to sing (apart from the "With a mighty hand" part which takes some practice!) and also easily remembered.

Playing 'Give Thanks To The Lord Our God And King' on a guitar is quite easy too. I tend to play it in 'G' as it's easier to sing but I believe it's written in 'A' which is also manageable. You don't need the sheet music either as the timing is simple to pick up and remember. Chris Tomlin has a gift for writing great songs that express in a fresh new way what we want to say to God in our hearts. Forever, did and still does, just that - it allows us to sing about how faithful and unchanging He is, and His love is towards us.

  1. I agree that simplicity is one of the best aspects of this song, but I think the biggest reason for the popularity of this song is that it is purely scripture. Much criticism of modern worship is the lack of content in the lyrics. This song is straight from the Bible. In my humble opinion, this is one of the things that makes it a lasting and popular song.
